Quick thoughts on the Subaru Impreza STi:
“Wait, what, Aaron?”…you say…”No, the internet says that it gets better fuel economy.”
Well, news flash…the internet is stupid, sometimes.
Yes, the epa rating is “17 city and 25 highway”
Yes, now laugh…because this is if you are driving it like a grandmother…
I literally mean, a person who drives so slow that they impede the actual progress of humanity and shouldn’t be allowed on roads.
And if you bought this car, this is the last way you’re going to drive it!!!
You’re going want to throttle it into the corners, take off like a race car, pass people who are slowing the progress of humanity…you bought a fast car, damit, you’re going to use it…promise…and you are going to pay for it…and you will not care, at that very moment.
And if you drive it this way, guess what? You’re going to see 10 to 14 mpg on a good day.
Yes, it’s fast….It’s not a traditional type of “fast”, but a particular kind…where you have to drive it a certain way or else you wouldn’t find anything impressive about it.
There is a lot of turbo lag and it needs to be set up a particular way to really get all of that power out…if you don’t do this, you’re going to think: “Is this all?”
No, there’s more…really.
As for its feel: it really just feels like a fast economy car, without the economy…
See, when you’re in a BMW or a Mercedes or a Lexus…it feels like a higher end car…lots of thick leather, quiet interior, solid feeling fit and finish (as if it were carved from a block of love, just to surround and nurture you).
The Impreza feels like this…”Look: I don’t like you, you don’t like me, let’s just drive and get it over with.”
Not that this car is made poorly…No: it’s made very well…but the ergonomics are awkward…it’s a tight fit for a guy over 6ft…and it doesn’t like your friends either…and it’s got a wonderful array of cheap plastics to surround you!!
But, now, if you know what you’re doing with this car…HOLY CRAP!!!
But that’s the rub…”IF”
And, fact is, that “If” component will probably be illegal, unless you are on a closed course…and you would probably have to have some race driving experience, which not everyone has…and you will find that your day to day routine will not offer many opportunities to reach this car’s potential…so it’s sort of like buying a fire breathing dragon to act like a parakeet…it’s going to be a frustrating event, to say the least…where there is all of this potential calling you out…and not much you can do with it.
And it’s not that this is an “affordable car” really…fuel alone can break the common man’s bank…and the price tag creeps near $40k.
For this same money, a person can buy a really nice one year old BMW 335i xDrive…it’s all wheel drive…it’s fun…it’s fast…and it gets 2 to 3 times the fuel economy!!!
And, guess, what? It’s also roomier, better interior, a better fit and finish…and, on a track, it’s really good…and it looks classy!!!
So, here’s my thoughts on the Impreza Sti, it’s not that it’s a bad car…it’s not…it’s just a car that lacks perspective on what makes a car really good for everyday use…and, yes, there are better options.
